You don’t need to become a Grammar Nazi in order to crack the CAT Exam. Just keeping your basics strong and working a little more on your vocabulary will do the work for you. English is a subject that all of us have been taught since forever. Yet, we tend to make certain mistakes while communicating to each other quite often.

Here are a few tips to help you out:

  • Vocabulary:

Get hold of a good dictionary and learn 20 words minimum every day. You can also download various apps such as Kaplan GRE and refer to books like “Word Power Made Easy” by Norman Lewis.

  • Read, read and read:

Make it a habit to read the newspaper every morning and try not just to read the headlines but also the inside matter. This will help you not only to improve your English but also to speak fluent English and increase your knowledge on current affairs.

  • Grammar:

If you think grammar is easy since you have been taught since nursery, it is time you realize it’s not. You don’t even realize when you get habituated of using certain words in an inappropriate way thinking you are right. Refer to “Wren and Martin English Grammar” to work upon your skills.

  • Practice well:

The only way to excel in any language is to practice it thoroughly. Read books of different genres and write down words that you feel are important or that you do not understand. Evaluate your notes later and try to use them too often.

  • Know your topics:

There are various topics that are focused upon such as para-jumbling, summary questions, critical reasoning and sentence completion apart from particularly Grammar and Vocab questions. It is important to know what pattern to follow and how to go about all the questions to answer them correctly and smartly.

  • Art of Elimination:

Some questions will be tricky and some will test your thinking ability in a way that will confuse you. You should be capable of solving questions and read the choices along with them for getting a better idea about elimination of choices. This method makes selecting an answer easier for you, increasing confidence to complete the entire exam positively.

  • Be confident:

Quite a lot of times it is possible that you may get confused between two options since both of them seem the right option. That is where you might get stuck and waste a lot of time resulting in panicking and missing on time for other questions.

  • Value your time:

While practicing, keep a track of how much time you require to complete different types of question. Check how accurate your answers are and how much you have to think before choosing the option.

  • Improve every minute:

English is something that every second person you meet is aware of. Try and talk to people mostly in English. Pay attention to the way people talk. Don’t feel low if they tend to correct your mistakes. On the other hand, don’t even hesitate to point out their mistakes, if they make any.

  • Watch Movies:

As interesting as this tip seems, it is one of the best ways to make your English strong. Reading too much all the time is boring. Also, we have a tendency to grasp things more quickly while listening rather than reading since the voice gets caught up in our conscience. This is a quick method to remember and analyze words.

Starting early means you have time to deal with things in small steps. Making mistakes is a natural part of the language learning process. The key is to learn from these mistakes.  In a world where everyone else is learning, if you don’t take it seriously, you will fall behind.
